UK Damp & Decay Control have been in the damp-proofing and timber treatment industry for nearly 30 years. In that time we have been successfully carried damp proofing, woodworm treatment, dry rot treatment, fungal decay control and general property care maintenance throughout the South East of England. In the last 5-6 years we have now adopted a more holistic approach to building preservation and seek to find alternative,chemical-free, environmentally solutions to dampness and timber decay.
 
Most houses never need any damp-proofing or timber treatment but these are always recommended by Building Society Surveyors when they carry out surveys for mortgage purposes. This leaves the door open for damp-proofing and timber treatment companies offering ‘free survey’ and these invariably recommend remedial treatments which are really rarely needed and hard to justify. We had a recent case like this in Station Road, Twyford RG10 9NS which was being sold and damp and decay issues were highlighted on the mortgage survey. The buyer had a free survey undertaken by a damp-proofing and timber treatment company from Oxford who recommended over works costing over £5,000. We carried out a more in depth survey and found that there was virtually no damp or timber decay and only minor works were required costing less than £500. Once these works were carried out we were able to issue a guarantee against the re-occurrence of any rising damp, woodworm or fungal decay which kept the satisfied the seller, buyer and also the mortgage provider.
 
Another similar one was in Cowley, Oxford OX4 3EW where extensive damp-proofing works were recommended following a mortgage recommendation and a free survey from and Reading based damp-proofing and timber treatment company. The house was built around 1930 and had a perfectly good damp-course and no remedial works were required and we saved our client nearly £4,000 by avoiding unnecessary chemical damp-proofing and associated water-proof rendering.
 
UK Damp & Decay control is a nationwide company, members of the Property Care Association, with specialist Damp & Timber surveyors who can carry out independent dampness and timber surveys throughout the area. Usually we find that houses throughout the South East of England area have a physical damp course which is still effective so chemical damp-proofing is hardly never required. Even if a property does not have a physical damp-proof course we can recommend remedies to control Rising Damp which are chemical free and environmentally friendly such as reducing external ground levels and installing extra airbricks. Similarly woodworm and fungal decay can be controlled by reducing the moisture content of timbers and the use of preservatives is rarely need to combat woodworm, wet rot or dry rot. We don’t carry out any free damp surveys or estimates but there are several companies around who will gladly undertake free damp and timber surveys and there are a number who operated across the South East and these include Kenwood, Lifecote, Holland Damp-Proofing and Schrijver Damp Control but don’t be surprised if you have a free damp survey undertaken by any of these companies or others not mentioned that some form of chemical damp-proofing or tube/insert damp-proofing system is recommended.
